If you read my post about 20 things about me you’ll know that I am a HUGE Anglophile- so much so that my Netflix queue is loaded the British shows.
*denotes it’s on Amazon Prime
ªdenotes it’s an Australian series
1. Midsomer Murders
This show has 19 (going on 20!) seasons and I’ve seen every episode like 3 times. It follows DCI Barnaby (x2) and his sergeant (there are a lot) as they solve murders in the Midsomer county of England.
Just heard that season 2 of Poldark is now on Amazon Prime! *cue squeals of excitement* Poldark is about Ross Poldark who went off to war and was thought to be dead so his fiancé married someone else and his fortune goes down the toilet. The series follows him as he tries (and fails and also wins!) to regain his life.
The disappearance of a young boy in a small costal town raises many questions, doubts and promises a lot of twists and turns.
3. The Crown
Who hasn’t heard of this amazing show about Queen Elizabeth II and the monarchy?! I always wanted to be a princess… not so much now.
4. Death Comes to Pemberley
It is a well known fact that Pride and Prejudice is already a masterpiece, so what could make it better? A murder that involves all our favorite characters of course.
5. Death in Paradise
An awkward British detective is transferred to an island paradise when his colleague is murdered. He is forced to stay on this island he hates and he and his team solve island murders.
6. The Doctor Blake Mysteriesª
Technically this is an Australian series set post WWII, about a troubled pathologist who lost his wife and daughter His father also dies so he returns home to take over the practice and… you guessed it- solve murders (much to the annoyance of the local policemen)
This is another Amazon Prime series that takes place in and around Oxford university. Lewis follows DI Lewis (who’s wife was killed in a hit and run accident) and sergeant Hathaway as they solve some super complex murders- this series requires a couple rewatches to fully understand what happened.
7. North and South
This is kinda like Pride and Prejudice. It’s about a rich city man who falls for a rather poor (then becomes rich on her own) girl from the country. Social issues, class rank, and arranged marriages are also major themes.
8. Doc Martin
A light-hearted dramedy about Dr. Martin Ellingham who has a fear of blood so he leaves his high powered London job and moves to an eccentric seaside village. Life ensues.
9. The Paradise
IT ONLY DID 2 SEASONS! Waaaah! Poor timing on their part. It’s pretty much Mr. Selfridge with a few tweaks.
10. Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteriesª
Saving the best for last! It isn’t the best murder mystery show. but I find it amazing. This is about Phryne Fisher who just inherited a large fortune from someone in England so she returns to Melbourne and starts her own private detecting agency-again the local policeman is not amused.
