If you read my post about 20 things about me you’ll know that I am a HUGE Anglophile- so much so that my Netflix queue is loaded the British shows.

10 of the best and my favorite British shows on Netflix

*denotes it’s on Amazon Prime
ªdenotes it’s an Australian series

1. Midsomer Murders
This show has 19 (going on 20!) seasons and I’ve seen every episode like 3 times. It follows DCI Barnaby (x2) and his sergeant (there are a lot) as they solve murders in the Midsomer county of England.

2.Poldark*
Just heard that season 2 of Poldark is now on Amazon Prime! *cue squeals of excitement* Poldark is about Ross Poldark who went off to war and was thought to be dead so his fiancé married someone else and his fortune goes down the toilet. The series follows him as he tries (and fails and also wins!) to regain his life.

3. Broadchurch
The disappearance of a young boy in a small costal town raises many questions, doubts and promises a lot of twists and turns.

3. The Crown
Who hasn’t heard of this amazing show about Queen Elizabeth II and the monarchy?! I always wanted to be a princess… not so much now.

4. Death Comes to Pemberley
It is a well known fact that Pride and Prejudice is already a masterpiece, so what could make it better? A murder that involves all our favorite characters of course.

5. Death in Paradise
An awkward British detective is transferred to an island paradise when his colleague is murdered. He is forced to stay on this island he hates and he and his team solve island murders.

6. The Doctor Blake Mysteriesª
Technically this is an Australian series set post WWII, about a troubled pathologist who lost his wife and daughter His father also dies so he returns home to take over the practice and… you guessed it- solve murders (much to the annoyance of the local policemen)

6. Lewis*
This is another Amazon Prime series that takes place in and around Oxford university. Lewis follows DI Lewis (who’s wife was killed in a hit and run accident) and sergeant Hathaway as they solve some super complex murders- this series requires a couple rewatches to fully understand what happened.

7. North and South
This is kinda like Pride and Prejudice. It’s about a rich city man who falls for a rather poor (then becomes rich on her own) girl from the country. Social issues, class rank, and arranged marriages are also major themes.

8. Doc Martin
A light-hearted dramedy about Dr. Martin Ellingham who has a fear of blood so he leaves his high powered London job and moves to an eccentric seaside village. Life ensues.

9. The Paradise
IT ONLY DID 2 SEASONS! Waaaah! Poor timing on their part. It’s pretty much Mr. Selfridge with a few tweaks.

10. Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteriesª
Saving the best for last! It isn’t the best murder mystery show. but I find it amazing. This is about Phryne Fisher who just inherited a large fortune from someone in England so she returns to Melbourne and starts her own private detecting agency-again the local policeman is not amused.

I’ve heard great things about The Crown! We are just finishing up our DVR or primetime shows so I will have to present that (and a few others here)for our next series to watch.

    • We started The Crown and didn’t like it, but we tried it again and LOVED IT!

  • How did you list so many I haven’t seen yet? I have watched The Paradise and North and South, and started The Crown, but not the others! Thanks for the suggestions.

    • Haha give me all the British shows!

  • You have such good choices! I’m a huge sucker for British shows too; I particularly love the BBC’s young adult dramas like Being Human and Misfits, as well as their various talk/game/quiz shows (Big Fat Quiz of the Year is my personal favorite). The talk/game/quiz shows are good if you like specific British celebrities and/or a British sense of humor, because they’re always hilarious.

    • The Office (UK version) is freaking hilarious!

  • Brittany Ferrell

I have to check these out! I am totally obsessed with The Fall right now, which I believe was originally on BBC. As a teacher in summer break, I am going to check out your picks during my daughter’s nap time.

    • OMG The Fall is so good, but I see Jaime Dornan as a serial killer and not Christian Grey haha.

  • Loved this roundup. I’m definitely saving it for later. I’ve seen none of these. I really wanna check out Broadchurch.

    • Broadchurch is a little slow, but SOOO good!

  • That’s so awesome!

  • Ahh I haven’t watched a single one of these! The Crown has been on my list, but I need to get on it asap!

  • Taylor Mobley

I’m glad I’m not the only one that loves British TV shows! I’m definitely saving this for later!

  • Anna Hubbard

I’ve only seen The Crown on this list, but I love British shows so I’ll have to check these out!

  • I haven’t seen any of these which makes me so excited! I’ve been meaning to start The Crown… I should do that one of these days

  • You have my taste in shows! My husband is British, so I’ve been exposed to a lot of shows that I never would have seen before. I am super excited to watch some of these!

  • thesophiadiaries

Kinda surprised you didn’t add sherlock 😉 But I’ve been dying to watch the crown haha

    • I was waiting for someone to say that haha.

      • thesophiadiaries

        hahahahha 🙂

  • BROADCHURCH, YES!!! I have watched both the original and the re-make. It’s just so good.

    Molly // Miss Molly Moon

    • There’s a remake?!?! I have to find it!

  • Amanda K

Broadchuch was so good! Need to watch these other ones!

  • So many great shows! I need to check these out.

  • Death in Paradise and Poldark are my favorites. Death in Paradise is funny to me because of the British detective and his awkwardness. But Poldark is so dark, dramatic, and romantic that it is hard to stop watching it! Great list!

    • We just finished season 2 of Poldark…all I can say is :O

  • Allison Ellzey

I feel like I’d really love The Crown! I love shows about the British monarch and royalty in general!

    • We do too! It was super interesting.

  • Carly Ned

I’ve actually never heard of any of these! I’ll have to check them out.

  • I’ve never heard of any of these except The Crown. I will have to check some of these out!

  • Elly Leavitt

yesssss love love love broadchurch ! so good x
