Hello there! It’s the second week of guest posting month and today we’re featuring Sarah from Crazy Pet Guy. Be sure to check out Makaela’s guest post from last week.

Guest posters opinions are their own and may not reflect the views of APSL.

No matter how old you are, pets can make you a happier person.  Our fuzzy friends bring joy and light to our lives.  They give us a reason to get up and get moving, and we enjoy an unconditional love provided by them.  They greet us at the door happy to see us no matter how our day was or what happened.  Pets can bring happiness and a smile to you daily, and here’s why.

It's no secret that pets make you happier, but do you know exactly how? This post will tell you!

Better Self-Esteem

Pets provide a feeling of acceptance, which many people can struggle with in society.  Often we may feel rejected or socially shunned, but pets help us conquer those fears by creating a healthy, happy and loving relationship.

Enjoy the Now

Pets help us to live for the moment. They take us out of the past and future where we might be occupied or stressed with, and help us to enjoy what is right in front of us. Pets help us appreciate the little things such as a walk in the park or a nap with a cuddle buddy.

Get Us to Socialize

Dog and cat owners alike can bond over the funny things their pet did or can talk about issues they might have.  They help us emerge from our anti-social bubble and form bonds with other pet owners.  Socializing with other people can lower stress and increase our levels of happiness.

They Reduce Stress

Stress is a daily obstacle for most (okay, maybe all) of us. Pets help increase levels of oxytocin, which decreases our stress levels. These hormones stabilize or reduce the amount of cortisol, which is what makes us feel stressed.  Simply petting or spending time with a pet can help these hormones balance out, and you will feel less stressed.

They Help with Recovery

Dogs and pets can help people recover from psychological trauma.  Post-traumatic stress disorder is one that dogs can commonly assist.  Just being around a friendly dog can ease stress and anxiousness and help a person improve mentally. Dogs help remove negativity and instead shine a positive light people’s lives.

They Provide Companionship

Pets give us something to look forward to.  They need our care and love, and in return, they provide loving companionship.  Just looking at your pet can increase levels of  the “love hormone.”  They are excellent listeners and they will still love us and be our friend, no matter what.

Pets are amazing benefits to any human’s life. There are so many breeds and sizes to choose from so there is a special pet just for you. People that have pets are more likely to live longer and are happier people (hint hint). To them you are everything that is right in the world, and that unconditional love can make anyone feel better and happier.

Why do you think pets make you happier?

This is all so, so true! We adopted our lab, Forrest, just over a year ago and he has made our lives so much fuller & happier-I always look forward to spending time with him 🙂 There’s nothing better than me driving up and him running full speed ahead to greet me at the car door!

  • awe i love this! They really do help with companionship and stress reduction!

OMG all so true. They definitely provide stress relief, companionship, and a reason to live for many people. I have social anxiety and honestly when I bring my dog to the lake in the summer (just the 2 of us) or for a hike, I don’t feel so alone at all anymore. I don’t feel “weird” for being on a hike or at the lake on a nice day alone. I feel proud and happy. And fulfilled! Great post 🙂 thegoodthingscomin.wordpress.com

My kitties make me so much happier! While we have 3, one is only truly mine and he is my spirit animal. I honestly don’t know what I’d do without him!

I was scared of dogs but after seeing their unconditional love, I would like to have one. However, I do not know what to do when I go travelling

    • That’s always the hardest part 🙁

  • Those gifs are so cute! I honestly couldn’t live without my kitty, she warms my heart so much! Brilliant post x

Oh yes, my animals make me a happier person for sure! My boyfriend and I are always laughing because we spend most of our time talking about the funny things our animals do! 🙂

I’ve been thinking about getting a puppy but keep going back and forth!

  • Rita

Great post. I would be absolutely lost without my 2 dogs. As a blogger, working from home can get pretty lonely, but with my lovely furballs for company I always have somebody to chat to, even if they don’t always answer back 😉

  • I just moved halfway across the country from my family dog and I literally cried so much when I left! I love dogs and definitely miss having one present.

    • Aww leaving them is so hard, but seeing them again is so fulfilling!

  • Allison Ellzey

I can’t imagine life without my pup! She seriously helps in all aspects of my life!

    • I can’t imagine life without mine either haha.

  • Brooke Pollard

Absolutely love this post. Dogs are the best stress reliever and ultimately the best friend. I’ve had my sweet girl for 14 years and she’s my #1! Xo

    • Same! Ours is 16, but acts like he’s 2 haha.

  • I love this so much! My pup makes me so happy. She always makes me laugh with her antics and just being around her is a stress reliever for me. She’s also nice because I have to step away from my computer while I’m working to take her out. Taking breaks is a good thing!

    • Yes! Awesome excuse to take a break haha.

  • Puppies are the best! It’s amazing coming home to someone who unconditionally loves you.

    • Absolutely! That’s the best feeling.

pets make every day special. No matter how stressed I am, cant miss the welcome I get from my furry babies, when i get home.

  • I have always had pets. I honestly can’t imagine my life without them. I feel bad for people that are petless!

  • Stephanie Parrell

I need need need a pet in my life. So much commitment so I dont want to just have one and they not have a good quality of life. Nothing makes me happier then dogs not even humans. LOL

    • I get that, but they really are the best!

  • Sarah Gavin

I couldn’t agree more!! I swear my dog makes me a better person. Love this post

    • “be the person your dog thinks you are” haha!

  • My cat definitely adds some stress by throwing everything I own to the ground. But, my dog is a bundle of love!

  • Greta Hollar

My dog helps so much with anxiety and companionship! I don’t know what I’d do without my pup!

  • I don’t even have pets with me (I still just use my parents dog as ‘mine’), but gosh, I really want a dog – for all of these reasons!

    • Haha my parents dog is mine all the way!

  • I truly believe that my pets have a MASSIVE impact on my happiness. They are my company during the day, my comfort when I’m down, my cozy blanket when i’m cold and my smiles when I need cheering up. They are everything to me.

  • I don’t know what I would do without my little pup! He is absolutely exhausting and gives me the hardest time but you are so right, there are so many great things about having a pet in your life!

    xoxo, Paige

    • They can be exhausting, but so totally worth it!

  • The love between a man and an animal is as simple as a touching. I think it is easier to make friends with animals than to be friends with people.
