Ever since I could remember I’ve been getting horrible headaches. While I want to lie in a dark room sans noise and just sleep, that usually isn’t an option. These are my favorite headache remedies.

Sharing my favorite natural and not natural headache remedies

Rub my temples

Okay, this doesn’t get rid of the headache, but it does relieve some of the pain. Pro tip: massage lavender or peppermint essential oil on your temples also. Massage essential oil while rubbing your temples. Suffer from headaches? Get some relief tips… Click To Tweet

Drink water

A long time ago someone told me that a headache is just a sign of dehydration. While part of this is true, another part of me disagrees (mainly the continuous pounding in my head). So while it doesn’t solve my headache problem, it does alleviate some pain.

Ginger, ginger, ginger

Ginger helps with stomach pain, dizziness,  a sore throat and almost everything else. Ginger tea with lemon is usually my go to, but I’ve also gnawed on ginger candy, sucked on ginger root and ate the ginger from sushi by itself (sounds weird, but it totally helps).

Do some basic stretches

Nothing extreme because sometimes drastic movement makes me even more sick, but just moving my head up, down, left and right helps a bit.

Bite on a pencil

Most of the time a headache means you’re stressed. When you’re stressed you probably clench your teeth- so biting a pencil relieves tension and relaxes your jaw muscles.

Take a warm bath

This option is a great one if you’re home. The warm bath relaxes muscles, opens sinuses and just makes you feel better.

Tylenol

If all else fails (or for me I want immediate results) take some pain killers. When all else fails (headaches wise) take some Tylenol. Click To Tweet

Botox

I JUST found out that Botox isn’t just for wrinkles- it stops headaches BEFORE they start. Ask your doctor for more information, but the fact that it basically blocks the head pain before it even stops kinda seals the deal for me.

What are your favorite headache remedies?

I get headaches so often so this is SO good to know! Definitely need to try ginger!

  • I didn’t know ginger worked for headaches, but I’ll have to add this to my remedy list! I usually just pop a ton of ibuprofen and go to bed!

    • I usually do too when the pain is too much haha

  • I’ve heard that botox can also help with excess sweating if you get it injected in your underarms. So many random uses for it!

    • WHAT?! I knew there was injections for that, but I didn’t realize it was Botox too!

  • Wow! I’ve never heard of botox relieving headaches, how interesting! I’ve also heard that drinking cold powerade also helps with headaches because of the electrolytes. Thanks for sharing… I tend to get headaches before bad storms.

  • how interesting about botox as headache relief!! I have the misfortune of terrible migrains, I also haven’t tried biting on a pencil and drinking ginger tea – i never knew they worked on headaches, I use them for nausea or bloated.

I reach straight for the painkillers (I take celebrex) and water. I tend to get migraines when I’m dehydrated, not enough sleep or stress and try to avoid the causes, but well sometimes it can’t be helped!

    • Ginger tea is good for so many things!

  • Miss ALK

I suffered horribly from migraines in college and had to go on perscriptions for them, but these are some great suggestions before taking a measure that drastic!! Water is just so good for health and can definitely help with headaches!

I never thought to use Ginger. Headaches are so bad for me during the seasons changing from hot to cold I’m so glad I saw this!

    • Omg me too! When the weather turns suddenly my head throbs.

  • Brooke Pollard

I’ve never used Ginger for headaches before, usually just nausea… I’ll definitely check it out and see if it works for me. I have chronic migraines so I know the feeling, temple rubs and advil are my go-to’s!

  • mckenna bleu

I always get headaches in the back of my head near my neck. I think stress related. Thanks for the tips.

  • I definitely get tension headaches OFTEN with my two boys and current pregnancy. I’m always rubbing my temples as if it helps haha.

  • Interesting – I haven’t heard of the pencil tip! I’ll have to try it.

  • Baths are literally life changing!!- I feel like the hot water somehow solves all my problems! haha

    • Hot baths when I’m sick is a life saver haha.

  • Kate

I’ve recently started trying to relax my jaw when headaches strike too – makes such a difference!

    • Omg yes! I realize my jaw is clenched almost all the time.

  • Adriana

I have never tried ginger!! I’ve suffered from headaches for YEARS, and I’ve tried just about everything – except ginger! Going to try it!

  • Patricia Conte

Great remedies! I know I *always* need more water, and it surprising how well it works for headaches. i will try some ginger next time, too! Thanks!

    • I drink water and yet it never seems to be enough haha.

  • Water, water, water and naps always do it for me! I turn to Aleve if I can’t kick a bad headache, though!

  • My headaches often turn into horrible migraines, so I have to catch them pretty quick! A warm or really cold towel on my head does wonders, as does drinking some really cold water. Love your tips!

    • Oh gosh, I’ve had a few of those.

  • Karoline J.

I also love to rub in some oils around my temples area to reduce the headaches! A walk around those cooler temperatures works wonders for me as well! 🙂

    • Absolutely! Sometimes all we need is fresh air.

  • Great tips! Thankfully, I don’t get headaches too often, but it’s nice to have some alternatives to try first before reaching for medication.

  • I have a really hard time with headaches and one of my favorite tips to tell every is to drink water. It really works.

  • Ginger is like a wonder root isn’t it?! Amazing

  • I hate having headaches! They just are so annoying! LOL! I really need to try the ginger remedy!

  • Paige Rankin

I need to remember these. I get headaches frequently and hate taking medicine.

  • Hmm, never thought about rubbing essential oil on my temples. But will definitely be trying!

    • Omg lavender or peppermint works wonders!

  • I absolutely love making ginger tea!!

    • It’s the best, especially during the colder months.

  • Ginger and water all day for me! Those two always help!

  • Nichole

Oh my goodness thanks for sharing this! I have a really bad tendency to develop headaches at least once a week, I think I’ll try the essential oil trick. To be honest I’ve never really search for remedies and just dealt with them.
