Ever since our neighbor gave us essential oil from the lavender fields of France I have been OBSESSED. I know I use that word a lot, but honestly it’s been a constant obsession. Here are my favorite essential oils and their uses.

1. LAVENDER

My first and favorite essential oil. If you read this post you know that I always get headaches and dabbing lavender oil on my temples helps relieve the pain. It’s also good for relaxation, soothing bruises and reduces swelling on bug bites.  Oh and it smells pretty good too. If you only use one essential oil make it lavender. Click To Tweet

2. Peppermint

Peppermint oil is good for relaxing the body. I put a little on my temples, pressure points and on my upper lip under my nose so I breathe it in as I read and eventually sleep. I’ve also had a HORRIBLE dry cough and putting a bit on my sinuses helps a lot. Peppermint is also good for bad breathe, headaches and digestive issues.

3. Frankincense

Okay, in all honesty I though Frankincense was a mythical and magical gift for the baby Jesus… so when I heard it was an essential oil I was stunned and intrigued. This oil is great for stress, body aches and pains,  your immune system and so much more. I’ve even heard that it can help with cancer.

4. Eucalyptus

Eucalyptus oil is antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and is just all over beneficial. I mainly use it to treat wounds, help relieve itchy bug bites and as a fever reducer. Mix it with peppermint oil (cooling effect) and just a touch of water to reduce body temperature.  It’s also good for dental care and helps with diabetes management.

5. Lemongrass

Lemongrass is a lot more than a chicken seasoning. This essential oil can be used to kill bacteria, soothe sore muscles and ward of insects! Use it as a natural way to repel mosquitos, add it to your lotion, body was or just plain soap to help purify your skin and you can rub a bit on your scalp to strengthen hair follicles.

6. Orange

Have you ever peeled an orange and just loooooved the way it smelled? Well orange oil is so much more than a fragrant air purifier. This citrus oils has the ability to fight cancerous tumors, treat cold and flu symptoms and fights acne. Place it in a diffuser to boost your mood, rub a little on your face to for anti-aging properties and dilute it with water and coconut oil for an all natural kitchen/house cleaner.

7. Tea Tree

Out of all my essential oils, this one doesn’t get as much use from me…This oil is also good for fighting acne-mix it with raw honey for a gentle acne face wash. It’s also good for hair treatment, cleansing, eczema, psoriasis, killing mold and fighting fungus. TTO is also a good topical treatment for dry cuticles, earaches, cold sores and chicken pox.

Don’t have a diffuser? Don’t panic you can always:

  • apply it directly
  • mix it with plain lotion
  • add a few drops to a hot bath
  • mix it with water and spray it
  • apply it to a cotton ball and place in the air vents of your car
  • make candles

  • I love my essential oils. I agree about Frankincense, I thought it was a magical gift for baby Jesus, too but with cold and flu season going on its one of my go to’s lately. I’ve been using spearmint and a concentration blend a lot lately, too and my husband and I are sleeping with our diffused going with Breathe, Spearmint, and Lavender in it.

    Everything you mentioned is pretty good. My personal favorite is Almond oil. I use it all over my body including my hair. It leaves my skin very hydrated and it adds extra shine to my hair. I love it.

  • I love using the lavender essential oil in my diffuser. It helps with sleeping.

  • I love peppermint oil! I use lavender oil in my hot tub.
    Once I added orange essential oil in my bath and my ankle’s skin got very itchy and irritated. Never going to use orange essential oil in my bath tub, I guess.

    I use peppermint oil often! It is super helpful for relaxing showers. I use a lavender oil spray on my pillows when I get super stressed out. It definitely helps me fall asleep easily.

    I’ve been reading a lot about essential oils, and it’s truly astounding all the health benefits associated with these oils. Why isn’t this more common knowledge?! Thank you for spreading this important information. I’ll definitely have to share this post with my mom – I know she’ll love it. And thank you for sharing alternate ways to use it. We don’t have a diffuser, but I would have never thought to put it in my lotion!

    I love to use Lavender, peppermint, and tea tree oil! I also get awful headaches, and I usually just put peppermint on my temples. I’ve never heard of using lavender for headaches–I’ll have to try it!

  • I haven’t personally gotten into essential oils but I love when the masseuse uses them during my massages. I love the smell of orange and it is cool to learn about its properties!

    I use Tea Tree daily with a blend of coconut and jojoba oils for a nighttime face moisturizer to help with mild acne. And of course Lavender – all the time! It just smells so good! Peppermint is also really helpful for lightheadedness or malaise:)

    Such great choices! Lavender is my usual go-to, but I’ve recently been using Copaiba more and more!

  • I’m not a big essential oil kind of girl but I had a friend give me peppermint and lavender and I really loved both. The lavender was very calming and the peppermint helped a lot with headaches and even nausea during my pregnancy.
