A question I got a lot during my Christmas break was how do I start a blog? Well I won’t go into the technical stuff because I find it boring, but here’s a quick guide to starting a blog.
1. Understand what you’re taking on
Blogging isn’t just writing whatever you want then posting it online. Well part of it is, but there is a lot more to it! Theres SEO, design elements, target audiences, marketing, promotion, monetizing and much more. So before jumping in, do your research and please stop saying that it’s easy.
2. Figure out which platform is right for you
I started with Blogger, went to Squarespace, went back to Blogger and finally settled on WordPress (it’ll be a year on the 9th!) Read my saga here. There isn’t really a right or wrong answer to the right platform, but the only thing I would recommend is doing your research.
3. Upgrade to a dedicated domain
This is a total personal preference thing, but having a personal web address (xyz.com not xyz.theplatform.com) just seems a little more professional. If you’re just starting out, keep the xyz.theplatform.com address, but if and when you decide to upgrade use this link (affiliate) to buy your own personal domain.
4. Find a template
Mine is from A Prettier Web, but I’ve found LOTS of gorgeous themes out there! Having a set template makes everything look more professional. cohesive and just put together. Read this to learn how to customize a theme.
5. Write some drafts
Haha so you think you’re just gonna publish the first thing you write? That’s cute. A lot of the bloggers I’ve talked to have written things, scrapped ideas that they thought was gonna work and went in a complete different direction. Have a couple backup posts in your queue just in case.
I am part of this club. If you want to start a blog and for it to be successful, commit! Having a blog won’t just work out well for you- you have to work, work then work some more. Don’t start a blog, only update it sporadically then just forget about it (I totally did that…) and call yourself a blogger. It doesn’t work that way.
Are you planning to start a blog this year?
P.S. check if the domain you want is available here!
